Clean Water: What You Can Do

  • Look for the Standard 61 Label: U.S. plumbing codes require the use of NSF/ANSI Standard 61 certified plumbing products. NSF 61 measures the amount of lead that will leach into the water under the toughest conditions, including hot water moving the faucets and pipes.
  • Let the water run from your tap for a few seconds before using for drinking or cooking to flush out the water that sits in contact with the pipes for long periods of time.
  • Do not use hot water from a standard faucet for cooking or drinking.
  • Periodically clean out the strainer on your faucets to remove contaminants.
  • Review water quality information provided by municipal water service providers for information on the safety of your local water supply. If you use a well for your potable water, periodically test the water using a testing kit or service.
