Quarterly Report - 1st Qtr 2016

  • Flint, MI Relief Effort. PMI worked with the UA (plumbers union) on a relief effort in Flint, MI installing more than 700 PMI member-donated faucets and supplies so residents could use state-provided filters.
    • Media attention: the event was went viral; and was picked up by national and local media including: Huffington Post, NPR, People Magazine, CBS and ABC News.
    • Political attention: PMI was acknowledged and thanked for their efforts in Flint by presidential candidates during campaign speeches and by Congress during congressional hearings on Flint.
  • Federal Legislation: PMI contributed to an Amendment authorizing EPA WaterSense, with bipartisan support of six Senators; currently under consideration as part of the Senate Energy Bill.
  • California Drought Update: State Water Resources Control Board expected to relax mandatory conservation targets enacted last year due to increased snow packs; decision expected April 2016.
  • California Appliance Efficiency Regulations: Set meeting with lead Energy Commissioner Andrew McAllister and executive staff (PMI CA Fly-In, May 2016) to discuss low flow compliance efforts.
  • PCR Guidance Document: PMI released a Product Category Rule (PCR) Guidance Document for Kitchen and Bath Vessel Fixtures; developed by PMI’s Sustainability Task Group with Board approval.
  • SAC meeting at KBIS: Hosted a Strategic Advisory Council Meeting during the KBIS tradeshow in Las Vegas with both current and immediate-past slates.
  • Higgens tapped to lead: PMI CEO/Executive Director, Barbara C. Higgens was elected to chair the Crystal Vision executive committee for 2016.
  • 2015 Audit: PMI has finalized its 2015 Audit and posted the results online here.
  • Developing and strengthening allies:
  • Success in the technical arena:
    • Attended a “Breaking Down Barriers” Workshop at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. with Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH)
    • Submitted comments to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) on behalf of PMI
    • Evaluating research proposals by Dr. Marc Edwards, and others, to determine the impact of low flow conditions on pathogen growth.
